Sylhet Jamaat man drowns in police chase

A Jamaat-e-Islami activist drowned in the Surma River in Biswanath upazila of the district on Wednesday allegedly after being chased by police.

 

The deceased was identified as Shahinul Islam Shahin, 42, son of late Rois Ali of Satpur village in the upazila, UNB reports.

 

Locals said police conducted a drive in an illegal gambling spot in front of Ragib-Rabeya High School around 5pm and arrested two alleged gamblers.


Shahin, who was accused in eight cases, jumped into the river to evade arrest and went missing.

 

On information, firefighters rushed in and recovered the body around 8:30 pm tonight.

 

Meanwhile, officer-in-charge of Biswanath Police Station Monirul Islam denied chasing Shahin.
