10 firms sued over harmful substances in milk

Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) yesterday filed cases against 10 companies after finding harmful heavy metals in their pasteurised milk.

The move came following a High Court order on July 16, which instruct-ed both the BFSA and Bangladesh Standards Testing Institution to re-port back to the court on their actions taken against adulteration of milk, curd and cattle feed by July 28.

BSFA inspector Kamrul Hasan filed 10 cases with the Pure Food Court in Nagar Bhaban in the capital. The court of Magistrate Mehedi Pavel Sweet took it into cognizance, Kamrul told The Daily Star last night.

The 10 companies against whom the cases were filed are Bangladesh Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (Milk Vita), Aftab Milk and Milk Products, Akij Food and Beverage (Farm Fresh), Baro Awlia Dairy Milk and Foods (Dairy Fresh), Aarong Dairy, Ichhamoti Dairy and Food Prod-ucts (Pura), Igloo Dairy, Pran Dairy, Shilaidaha Dairy (Ultra Milk), and Tania Dairy and Food Products.
